A row of restored thatched blackhouses near Kilmuir gives a genuine sense of how Skye crofters lived well into the 20th century, with low stone walls, small windows and simple furnished interiors that children can walk straight into. It's run by a local trust rather than a national body, which shows in its unpolished, homely feel. Just along the road is Kilmuir Cemetery, where Flora MacDonald - who famously helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape to Skye after Culloden - is buried beneath a tall Celtic cross, making a natural second stop. There's an admission charge, and the uneven ground and low doorways make it awkward for buggies or wheelchairs.
