This RSPB reserve near Castle Douglas protects a stretch of wetland alongside the River Dee, with hides giving good views over the marshes without disturbing the wildfowl and wading birds that use the site through the year. Red kites, reintroduced to this part of Galloway in recent decades, are a fairly regular sight overhead, a genuine spectacle for children given their size and distinctive forked tail. The reserve's quiet, unhurried trails suit a shorter, more contemplative visit rather than a full day out. It's free to visit, with parking at the reserve, and the main paths and hides are largely accessible, though some sections have uneven ground.
