About this place

55-acre artland near Sanquhar transforming a former opencast mine into a cosmos-inspired landscape.

Designed by the landscape architect and artist Charles Jencks, this 55-acre site near Sanquhar transformed a former opencast coal mine into an extraordinary landscape of sculpted mounds, spiral walkways and stone formations inspired by cosmology and the structure of the universe. It's an unusual, thought-provoking outing rather than a conventional attraction, with plenty for children to climb and explore even without grasping the astronomical ideas behind the design. The scale of the earthworks makes for striking photographs from the higher viewpoints. It's free to visit, with parking on site, though the grassy, sloped paths make it less suitable for buggies.
