Named after John Muir, the Dunbar-born father of the American national parks movement who emigrated to the United States as a boy, this extensive country park protects a genuinely varied stretch of East Lothian coastline, taking in sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, salt marsh and woodland. Waymarked trails of varying length let families choose between a short beach walk and a longer exploration of the wider reserve, with a good chance of spotting wading birds along the shore. Muir's own birthplace, a modest house in Dunbar itself, can be combined with a visit for those interested in his conservation legacy. It's free to visit, with several car parks giving access to different parts of the park, and terrain varies from flat paths to rougher coastal sections.
