Loch Katrine sits at the heart of the Trossachs and has supplied Glasgow's drinking water since 1859, an engineering achievement that was, remarkably, opened by Queen Victoria herself. The loch and the woodland trails around Trossachs Pier can be explored on foot or by bike entirely for free, while the SS Sir Walter Scott, a genuine Victorian steamship, still carries visitors out onto the water on seasonal cruises. The loch's setting, framed by the surrounding Trossachs hills, gives it a reputation as one of the most scenic spots in this part of Scotland. It's free to visit the shore and trails, with a charge for the steamship cruise and bike hire, and the main paths near the pier are buggy-friendly.
