This RSPB reserve on the less-visited eastern shore of Loch Lomond protects ancient oak woodland that's home to a good range of woodland birds, including several species of warbler in the summer months. A dramatic waterfall, where the Snaid Burn crashes down towards the loch beside the historic Inversnaid Hotel, gives the short walk from the car park a striking payoff even without spotting much wildlife. The reserve also sits on the West Highland Way, Scotland's best-known long-distance walking route, so it's not unusual to see through-walkers passing on their way north. It's free to visit, with limited parking near the hotel, and the trails involve genuinely uneven, rooty woodland ground.
