About this place
Ruined coastal castle above Dunure harbour, with rockpools below.
This ruined coastal castle stands above Dunure's small harbour, its clifftop position giving dramatic views along the Ayrshire coast, and it carries a suitably dark piece of local legend involving the roasting of a local abbot over a fire by the castle's Kennedy family owners during a dispute over church lands. Rockpools below the castle give children something to explore at low tide, adding an easy outdoor activity to the historical visit. It's a compact site, easily explored within half an hour. It's free to visit, and the uneven ground makes it unsuitable for buggies.
