This small medieval tower stands on a rocky headland near West Kilbride, its position chosen for defence with the sea on several sides, and it can be freely explored without an admission charge, which is unusual among Scotland's castles. The approach along the coast gives good views out towards Arran and the Cumbraes, and the surrounding shoreline is worth exploring in its own right, with rockpools and views of passing seabirds. It's a compact, easily managed visit rather than a full day out. It's free to visit, with parking nearby and the site's uneven ground making it unsuitable for buggies.
