This sweeping sandy beach at Cruden Bay is overlooked from a nearby clifftop by the ruins of Slains Castle, said to have inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula after he stayed nearby while writing the novel, giving the beach an atmospheric backdrop beyond its own considerable scale. The dunes behind the beach form part of a golf course, one of Scotland's most highly regarded links courses, though the beach itself remains freely open to walkers regardless. It's a quieter, more dramatic stretch of Aberdeenshire coast than some of the busier beaches further south. It's free to visit, with parking available in the village and toilets nearby.
