Scotland's only named lake, with free lochside walks and a boat crossing to the ruined Inchmahome Priory.

Confusingly known as a lake rather than a loch — one of the only bodies of water in Scotland to carry the name — the Lake of Menteith offers easy walking along its shore near Port of Menteith, with views across to the small wooded island holding the ruins of Inchmahome Priory. A short boat crossing, run seasonally, takes visitors out to explore the priory itself, where the young Mary, Queen of Scots was sheltered for safety in 1547 before being sent to France. The lochside walk and views are free to enjoy without taking the boat trip. There's a charge for the priory boat crossing, with the shore paths free and largely accessible, and parking available near the pier.
