About this place

Georgian mansion near Montrose with period rooms and walled garden.

This elegant Georgian mansion near Montrose was designed by the architect William Adam in the 1730s for the Erskine family, and its restored period rooms, hung with fine plasterwork, give a strong sense of 18th-century aristocratic life. Outside, a walled garden and wider estate grounds offer easy walking, with views over the nearby Montrose Basin adding some extra interest for wildlife-minded visitors. Cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, it's a quieter, less crowded visit than some of the region's better-known castles. There's an admission charge for the house, with the grounds free to explore, and a cafe on site.
