This open-air museum in Newtonmore brings together original and reconstructed buildings to trace Highland life from the 1700s through to the mid-20th century, with a recreated township of turf-roofed houses giving a particularly vivid sense of pre-Clearance rural life. Costumed interpreters demonstrate traditional crafts and skills at points through the site, and the sheer scale of the museum, spread across a genuinely large area, means there's enough to fill several hours. A working croft and traditional shop add further texture to the historical picture. It's one of the best free family days out in the Highlands, well suited to older children studying this period of Scottish history as well as younger ones who simply enjoy exploring old buildings. Entry is free, with parking on site, and while much of the site is accessible, the ground is uneven throughout the outdoor areas.
