About this place

Wide sandy beach on the Solway Firth with views across the coastline and lighthouse nearby.

This wide, sandy stretch on the Solway Firth looks out across the water towards the hills of the Lake District on a clear day, with a distinctive lighthouse - one of the earliest built in Scotland, dating to 1748 - standing at the edge of the village. The beach itself has plenty of room for a proper family day out, from sandcastles to long walks, and the shallow, gently shelving sand makes it reasonably safe for paddling at low tide. It's a quieter option than some of Scotland's better-known beaches, with a golf course and a handful of shops nearby. It's free to visit, with parking available in the village.
