Red sandstone cathedral at the heart of Kirkwall, free to explore.
Founded in 1137 by Earl Rognvald in memory of his uncle St Magnus, this red and yellow sandstone cathedral still anchors the middle of Kirkwall, much as it has for nearly 900 years. Bones believed to be those of St Magnus and Earl Rognvald himself are set within two of the great stone pillars inside, discovered during restoration work in the 20th century. The interior is cool, atmospheric and free to wander, with a small shop and usually a friendly guide on hand to answer questions. It's an easy, unhurried stop in the middle of a Kirkwall visit, and works well combined with the Orkney Museum and the harbour just a short walk away.
