Despite its name, this small harbour village sits on the mainland rather than a true island, its history tied closely to nearby Whithorn, traditionally regarded as the site of Scotland's earliest recorded Christian settlement, founded by St Ninian in the early 5th century. A ruined medieval chapel on the headland marks a spot long associated with pilgrims arriving by sea. Beyond the historical interest, it's simply a pretty, quiet harbour to wander around, with views out across the water.
