Monument marking the raising of the Jacobite standard, with views of the famous railway viaduct.
This tall monument marks the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard in 1745, rallying Highland clans to the Jacobite cause in a rising that would end disastrously the following year at Culloden. The visitor centre, run by the National Trust for Scotland, tells that story, but many visitors come today for the view of the nearby Glenfinnan Viaduct, made instantly recognisable to a generation of children as the route of the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films. A steam train still crosses the viaduct on certain days in summer, timed to coincide with the best viewing opportunities. There's an admission charge for the visitor centre, with the viewpoint itself free to access.
