Overlooking the River Tweed at Kelso, Floors Castle is recognised as Scotland's largest inhabited castle, seat of the Duke of Roxburghe's family, originally designed by the architect William Adam in the 1720s and later given its elaborate turrets and towers by William Playfair in the 19th century. Extensive grounds include walled gardens and parkland walks along the river, giving plenty to explore beyond the state rooms themselves. Its scale and the sheer number of towers tend to make a strong first impression on children approaching along the drive. There's an admission charge, and the grounds are largely accessible, though the castle interior has some stairs.
