These gardens occupy the isthmus of land between two lochs near Stranraer, laid out in the 18th century by soldiers from the Earl of Stair's regiment using little more than picks, shovels and wheelbarrows to shape the dramatic terraces and avenues that still define the grounds today. A ruined castle, burned in 1716, stands at one end, while Lochinch Castle, still the family's home, remains private but visible across the grounds. An avenue of towering monkey puzzle trees and extensive rhododendron plantings make late spring a particularly striking time to visit. There's an admission charge, and the grounds are largely accessible, though the scale means a fair amount of walking.
