The cliffs at Eshaness, in the far north-west of Shetland's Mainland, are formed from ancient volcanic rock and have been carved by the Atlantic into an extraordinary landscape of stacks, blowholes and geos, among the most dramatic coastal scenery anywhere in Scotland. A lighthouse marks the point, and waymarked paths along the clifftop give sweeping views without needing to venture too close to the unfenced edges. Its remote location, a fair drive from Lerwick, means it stays quiet even in the height of summer, giving a genuine sense of wild, elemental scenery. It's free to visit, with parking near the lighthouse, and the clifftop paths are uneven and unsuitable for buggies.
