About this place
One of Scotland's great Georgian houses near Gordon, built by architects William and Robert Adam.
Regarded as one of the finest Georgian houses in Scotland, Mellerstain was designed in two stages by the father-and-son architects William and Robert Adam, whose neoclassical style shaped some of the most celebrated interiors in Britain. Elaborate plasterwork ceilings and a notable collection of paintings and furniture fill the main rooms, while the gardens outside include terraced lawns looking out over the Border countryside. It's a quieter, less crowded house visit than some of the region's bigger-name attractions. There's an admission charge, and while the gardens are accessible, the historic interior involves some stairs.
