The white-turreted silhouette of Blair Castle is a familiar Perthshire landmark, and it remains the seat of the Duke of Atholl, whose Atholl Highlanders are recognised as the only private army still permitted in Britain, granted the right by Queen Victoria in 1844. Inside, room after room of arms, portraits and period furniture trace the family's history, while the grounds outside include a walled garden, deer park and extensive woodland trails. It's a genuinely large estate, so a full visit can easily fill most of a day. There's an admission charge for the castle, with grounds-only tickets also available, and a cafe and shop on site.
