Known locally as 'the ship that never sailed' because its long, narrow shape and towers resemble a stone vessel moored on the Firth of Forth, Blackness Castle has served over the centuries as a fortress, prison and ammunition depot. Its distinctive silhouette has made it a popular filming location, appearing in Franco Zeffirelli's 1990 Hamlet and in the Outlander television series. Visitors can explore much of the castle's interior and battlements, with views out across the water from the top. There's an admission charge, and the uneven stone floors and stairs make it unsuitable for buggies or wheelchairs.
