Open-air museum preserving an original West Highland farming township.
Auchindrain preserves the last surviving example of an original West Highland fermtoun, a communal farming settlement where several tenant families once worked the land together, a pattern of life that largely disappeared elsewhere in Scotland by the 19th century. Because the township was inhabited right up until the 1960s, the buildings and their furnishings feel remarkably genuine rather than reconstructed, giving a real sense of how generations of ordinary Highland families actually lived. Costumed guides and demonstrations at some times of year add extra context to a self-guided wander around the site. There's an admission charge, and the site is largely outdoors on grass and earth paths.
