The battle fought here on 16 April 1746 brought a final, brutal end to the Jacobite rising, as government forces defeated Bonnie Prince Charlie's army in under an hour, a defeat that changed the course of Highland history and led to the systematic dismantling of clan society in the decades that followed. The National Trust for Scotland's visitor centre uses first-hand accounts from both sides to tell the story before visitors walk out onto the battlefield itself, where flags mark the front lines and simple stones commemorate the clans who fell. It's a sobering rather than lighthearted visit, but a genuinely powerful one for older children studying Scottish history. There's an admission charge, and the battlefield paths are largely accessible.
