Well-preserved 15th and 16th-century castle on the Clyde shore at Port Glasgow, free to explore.

This castle on the shore of the Clyde at Port Glasgow combines a 15th-century tower house with a grander 16th-century mansion added later by the Maxwell family, giving visitors a chance to see two different eras of Scottish domestic architecture in one building. Its riverside position, with views across to the working shipyards on the opposite bank, gives an interesting contrast between the historic building and the industrial landscape around it. The rooms retain enough original detail, including carved fireplaces, to give a genuine sense of how the house was once lived in. There's an admission charge, and the historic stairs and floors make much of the interior unsuitable for buggies.
