Dramatic cliff-top ruins with stunning sea views and historical exhibits.
Perched dramatically on a rocky headland near Stonehaven, with sheer cliffs dropping to the sea on three sides, Dunnottar Castle is one of the most striking ruins in Scotland and has a suitably dramatic history to match - the Scottish Crown Jewels, known as the Honours of Scotland, were famously smuggled out and hidden here during a siege by Cromwell's forces in 1651-52. The approach involves a steep path down and back up from the car park, which adds real drama to the visit but rules out buggies and makes it tough going for some visitors. There's an admission charge, and sturdy footwear is strongly recommended.
