Royal palace and historic gardens with trails suitable for children.
Now roofless but still hugely atmospheric, Linlithgow Palace was a favoured residence of the Stewart monarchs for generations and was the birthplace of both James V in 1512 and his daughter Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1542. Set on the shore of Linlithgow Loch, the ruined halls and towers can be freely explored, with spiral staircases leading up to views over the water and surrounding parkland. Family trails run through some of the main spaces, helping bring the palace's royal history to life for younger visitors. There's an admission charge, and the uneven stone floors and stairs make much of the interior unsuitable for buggies or wheelchairs.
