Dramatic sea cliffs and an RSPB reserve, alive with seabirds in early summer.
The sandstone cliffs at Marwick Head rise dramatically from the sea on Orkney's west coast, and from late spring through summer they're crowded with nesting seabirds - guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes and, in smaller numbers, puffins tucked into the grassy slopes near the top. An RSPB reserve covers the headland, with a waymarked coastal path giving safe views down onto the colonies without needing to go near the edge. At the clifftop stands the Kitchener Memorial, built in memory of Lord Kitchener and the crew of HMS Hampshire, which sank offshore in 1916. The walk is exposed to wind in all directions, so it's worth checking the forecast, and there are no facilities on site.
