Glen Esk is the longest and, to many, the most beautiful of the Angus glens, running deep into the hills north of Edzell, with the road eventually giving way to walking trails around Loch Lee and the ruined tower of Invermark Castle. Its remote, genuinely wild setting gives a strong sense of open hill country within a manageable drive from the coast, and the glen is a good spot for seeing red deer, particularly in the early morning or evening. It's a longer outing than most on this list, given the drive involved, better suited to families wanting a proper day in the hills rather than a quick stop. It's free to visit, with parking near Invermark, and the paths involve genuinely rough, hilly terrain unsuitable for buggies.
