Georgian house near the English border with parkland, a play area and a nationally important art collection.
Built in the 1750s for Patrick Home, Paxton House has a slightly wistful history behind its elegant Palladian design - it was originally intended as a home for his fiancée, a Prussian noblewoman named Sophie de Brandt, who ultimately never came to Scotland, leaving the grand house without the marriage it was built for. Today it houses an outstation of the National Galleries of Scotland, displaying works from the national collection alongside the house's own period rooms. Parkland walks and a play area give children plenty to do outdoors as well. There's an admission charge, and the grounds are largely accessible, with some stairs inside the house.
