Perched on its own small islet where three lochs - Duich, Long and Alsh - meet, Eilean Donan is one of the most photographed castles in Scotland, its picture-postcard silhouette connected to the mainland by a stone footbridge. The castle standing today is largely a 20th-century reconstruction, rebuilt between 1912 and 1932 after lying in ruins for nearly two centuries following its destruction by Royal Navy ships during the 1719 Jacobite rising. Inside, rooms furnished in period style tell the story of both the original castle and its painstaking rebuilding. There's an admission charge, and the castle's stairs make much of the interior unsuitable for buggies.
