Iconic point at the north-east tip of the Scottish mainland, with harbour and craft shops.
Long treated as the symbolic northern end of mainland Britain - the traditional pairing with Land's End in Cornwall for end-to-end journeys - John o' Groats sits at the north-eastern tip of Scotland, with views out towards Orkney across the Pentland Firth on a clear day. A small harbour, craft shops and cafes make it an easy stop to break up a longer journey, and a seasonal passenger ferry to Orkney runs from here in summer. It isn't actually the most northerly point of the mainland, a title that belongs to nearby Dunnet Head, but its symbolic status keeps it the more popular stop. It's free to visit, with parking available and a charge only for shops and any ferry crossing.
