About this place
Remarkable beach on Barra that doubles as the island's airport runway, with scheduled flights landing on the sand.
Traigh Mhor is a genuinely unique beach: at low tide, it serves as the runway for Barra Airport, making it the only airport in the world where scheduled flights land on a beach, with the timetable published around the tides rather than a fixed schedule. Watching a small plane touch down on the open sand is a memorable sight for children even without any interest in aviation, and the beach itself is a pleasant spot for a walk between flights, marked out with windsocks rather than conventional runway lighting. It's a genuinely unusual, low-key attraction rather than a developed tourist site. It's free to visit, with parking near the terminal building, and the beach is flat and easy to walk on.
